Gas Storage

NAFTA Speicher operates the Breitbrunn/Eggstätt, Inzenham-West and Wolfersberg facilities and also owns their subsurface and surface technology except a compressor station at Wolfersberg. These reservoirs are previously exhausted gas fields in south Bavaria between Munich and the well-known Chiemsee that can accommodate a total working gas capacity of 20 TWh.

Our storage facilities are depleted natural gas fields that formed many millions of years ago. The fact that natural gas was capable of collecting there in the first place proves that the covering layers above our reservoirs seal off the rock holding the gas safely from above.

These porous underground reservoirs are suitable for storing large amounts of natural gas and balancing seasonal variations in consumption. In summer, the natural gas is kept in storage, and in winter – when demand for gas frequently exceeds supply – the natural gas is delivered to the supply network and then to your homes, schools or factories.

With a combined storage volume of just under 1.8 bcm, our gas storage facilities play an important role in supplying Bavaria with natural gas throughout winter.

High-calorific natural gas or „H-Gas“ is stored in all three reservoirs and fall commercially within the scope of Trading Hub Europe. Storage capacity at Inzenham-West is marketed by NAFTA Speicher Inzenham GmbH and at the remaining two storage facilities by the partners which had contributed to constructing them.

NAFTA Speicher operates storage facilities Breitbrunn/Eggstätt and Wolfersberg as a technical operator. The Storage System Operators (SSO) for the two storages are Uniper Energy Storage and Bayernugs respectively. Storage facility Inzenham-West is operated by NAFTA Speicher and its SSO is NAFTA Speicher Inzenham – a wholly owned subsidiary of NAFTA Speicher.
